read: sapiens

A simple to read but long story of humans evolution, questioning what have we actually achieved for ourselves other than more diseases and longer working hours.

There was a section on pursuing happiness, culminating in the Buddhist belief that it's the pursuit of happy feelings that makes one's life perpetually unhappy.

It ends with a scary picture of a future where we slave for machines/ AI who control the world, a world that they can no longer explain to us, like how we cannot explain how wall street works to a monkey

read: don't believe it by Charlie Donlea

Story of an investigative journalist who writes a documentary to uncover the potential innocence of a person in jail.

She uncovers evidence to prove the innocence but at the same time uncovers the real murderer. The plot twist was interesting. Ends with a sort of cliffhanger I suppose.

read: Holly

When I got to Chapter 2 it was perplexing given that it seemed I jumped to another story. But loved the build up with each of the murder and how Holly unraveled the threads.

This is not a supernatural horror story unlike many of Stephen King's. But of a natural evil that exists in humans, greedy, in this case, for life.

It references to another story which I'm now drawn to read.

read: if you like it darker

I enjoyed Danny Coughlin's Bad Dream because of the way it panned out and what that said about human nature and the creepy cop who's obsessed with numbers. 

I found the Dreamers somewhat Lovecraftian.

I actually quite like the Turbulent Expert, felt like an interesting concept with a tidy end where he found a successor.

read: the anxious generation

Makes me very self-conscious for working for a social media firm.
Totally agree that kids these days are overprotected in the real world but underprotected in the virtual. should not be brainwashed by social media. And not just kids but also adults.
Interesting the different effect on boys and girls. Girls being more driven to be integrated in a community hence the obsession with social media and boys being more driven to build agency or competency hence obsession with gaming.
Doesn't feel like things will change soon so we are stuck with a generation of people who are highly anxious, overprotected and unable to function in the social world as we know it today.

read: 太白星金有点烦

I love the irony of the office politics in the celestial setting and some of the common office headaches: reimbursements, writing reports, bureaucracy, backstabbing.

1. One action but split into 4 reports to write as though you completed 4 projects
2. Reimbursement is late according to policy but it's ok cos it's a P00 project from above
3. Vague instructions from management due to not wanting to be explicit in interfering with the politics
4. Nepotism: only works if you have a backing

But I thought it was really sweet he puts in some principles. How the monk left his body to pursue the real decoding, how thr God left part of his soul to reincarnate and experience life, how there's real collaboration and sentiments between the guanyin and him.

Illustrates poignantly the lives of everyday people in World War 2, just people trying to cope with their lives in the best way they can in a war context. From the locksmith who fiercely protects his museum treasure, the blind girl who just wants her papa and lives through the struggles not bravely but because she has no choice, the German officer who searches for the jewel to prolong his life, the white hair orphan who just wanted to escape his fate to be a miner, the war veteran who stepped up to protect his ward, the housemaid who wanted to play her small part in defending her country.

The story explores modern relatable concepts. Doing unreasonable things just cos the big boss says. Big boss has no grasp of the reality setting unreasonable tasks. Middle management not daring to say no and try to delegate the blame away. Affected (positively or negatively) by the politics in the court. Doing things cos of mortgage. Going against your conscience for work.

We have two cognitive systems, system 1 and 2.

System 1 works easily and automatically
System 2 takes more effort and operates methodically

These systems interact continually.
When walking use System 1 but can also think problems use System 2. If switch to running, System 1 is used more and System 2 is less and harder to think problems 

System 1
1. Seek causes in random events
2. Hindsight bias
3. Loss aversion and endowment effect
4. Anchoring

People who are cognitively busy are more likely to make selfish choices, use sexist language and make superficial judgement

Experience self lives the life and remembering self evaluates these experiences

System 1 intuition in experts. Only works in fields where challenges don't vary greatly, luck doesn't determine success and no gap between action and feedback e.g. stock.

A roller coaster ride, dramatic life story that is more volatile than a Korean drama.

I think the question is real:
Would a restrained Musk accomplish as much as a Musk unbound?
He is a hero molded out of flaws.

And to ourselves:
Are we crazy enough to think we can change the world?

Or maybe are we STILL crazy enough, because once upon a time, when we first left school, most of us were.

read: wandering earth

8 short stories related to the future of earth. I enjoy the boldness of his ideas, set on some scientific theories (for some) but all his characters are strangely dehumanized. Without emotions. Cold. Detached. Rational. The author also seemed to be quite nationalistic, criticizing capitalism, putting China as the center of development and so on. 

First story wandering earth has so much potential to develop. But it only covered the journey very briefly and from one generation, I would very much like to see when Earth reached its destination.

Second story mountain has not much relations to mountains. Maybe more poetic in its native language. The alien world is an interesting exploration of the concept of space.

Third story sun of China is indeed nationalistic. The least science focused of all the stories I think. Pleasant and easy to read.

Fourth story on the benefit of mankind had a what I felt irrelevant character development. Nonetheless the extrapolation of a possible socioeconomic future is very interesting.

Fifth story on curse 5.0 was amusing for the cameo by the author. Also not too science focused. Least favorite or memorable story.

Sixth story on the devourer used an aliens perspective to describe the self centredness of humans. The chapter on ants was particularly interesting

Seventh story on taking care of God was slightly bizarre but the idea of grooming a population for future I guess is a comment on parents grooming of the next generation for their retirement but not quite working out.

Eigth and ninth story had some conncetion. Made me wonder if all the stories had some thread tying it through but it didn't. It should have had some thing tying through the first story. I think would have been a much more powerful collection of stories.

Eighteh story was more poignant and beautiful in description but seems a bit random until you read the ninth.

Ninth story explored a few interesting scientific  concepts on cryo sleep, core of the earth and so on. The drama created upon wakening of the father made me think the crime of the son was bigger than what was eventually described which was slightly disappointing.

Very engaging 
Full of exciting plots and suspense.
Happy ending but not unrealistically everything went well for the heroine.
Full of interesting characters with sufficient time to develop quite a few key characters.
Very enjoyable read.

read: the forbidden stars

The axiom were sadly not powerful and not so smart. Even Callie can outwit them. Especially the last part. 

It's nice to have a happy ending.
The technology suggested were pretty cool. Interstellar travel. Nano machines. Gravity generators. Bridge generators. VR immersion and so on. The romance was tacky. The situations somehow far too convenient e.g. the marriage to Michael, the AI generate Ashok.

The romance is starting to get weird but I guess it's true that you get lonely in deep space. Just not what I want to read about in a science fiction.

The whole treatment for Sébastien is weird. And the solution to win by playing a game. At least they made it realistic by having Callie lose the game.

The overthrow of the ruler and making him stop the terror drones and swarm is also a bit bizarre.

 Reading on to part 3 cos I'm curious about the blue eye.

read: the wrong stars

Interesting hypothesis about the Liars and Axiom. 

The romance between Elena and Callie made it weird and unnatural. But the story of a rescue and unearthing the mystery of the Liar race is dramatic enough to keep you reading.

Would be a very colorful movie.
On to part two cos I'm curious about the Axioms. I feel like they must be some sort of very weak race that is highly intellectual and therefore using brainwashing and technology and slaves to hide their inadequacy.

read: hail mary

Went back to reading science fiction and this enthralled me.

It's the details of the science (that I don't understand) that made it feel real. Anthrophage? Its parasitical conquest across the universe. 

The schoolteacher persona felt unbelievable to make it to space, nor was Rocky the other alien but it was all very entertaining.

Good read!
On to my next science fiction.

A story of an entitled rich kid who refused to let go of his mommy, so eager to seek validation, and self-important, imagining feuds and conflicts and conspiracies. Self-righteous but weak-spined. 
The romance was sweet but felt too artificial. I don't believe Meg is perfect but maybe she's the strength he never had.

read: Billy summers

Another non scary book by Stephen King
Enjoyable read albeit somewhat improbable character and plot
Not too sure where the ending was going with a new character introduced, but I guess it showed the humane side of Billy as he introduced more and more errors into his operation. 
Always great build up of a foreboding sense similar to his scary stories
Wonder what the significance of the portrait in the summer house was, it felt like it was going to amount to more but it remained simply a portrait.

read: fairy tale

So not your typical fairy tale but surprisingly loyal to those components: the hero, the beautiful princess, the evil, castles and strange creatures.

But cos it's Stephen King u get the huge bats and roaches, the foreboding gloom of a haunted house and maimed people. 

All in all a pleasant read. It seemed strange that half the book was dedicated to the set up (finding of the fairy tale land) and the hero was slightly unreal (although he did add that he was not perfect at parts). But it's a fairytale so you can ignore logical flaws.

read: facial justice

Whom I've actually never heard of

As a book concept it was quite fascinating. Equality to the extreme, where even the pretty have to be brought down a notch in pursuit of equality. Instead of pursuing the implications of such a society, I felt that the author went instead into the petty story of an individual. I suppose she(maybe he) did touch upon the decay in a high conforming society (things not upkept), the need for the inspectors who were ironically above the rules. It touched a little on the idea of the underground/aboveground society split although to no effect unlike The Time Machine. All the interesting ideas but explored rather superficially methinks.

Read: First they killed my father

Cambodian massacre from the eyes of a 5 year old survivor. It's so far away from the life I have now I cannot imagine most of the things she described. At such a young age, to feel so much hatred you want to kill, to see so much deaths and where survival is so difficult that there is no room for others (stealing food from her baby sister, from an old granny, ignoring her best friends mother hugging her best friends corpse). It's written in the simple language of a 5 year old, but which made the horrors all the more stark.

Read: The Quiet Earth

Not quite a science fiction, but more of a human nature story on what happens if everyone else (or most people) in the world got wiped out.

The building up of the character foreboding the eventual outcome where he kills off his only other companion. 

The science is fairly inconsequential to the story, and the bizarre loop ending, reminiscent of Groundhog Day also doesn't quite make sense.

Interesting read with a fair bit of drama though.

Watched: The Life of Pi

Because my memory is appalling.
Just to capture my thoughts on some of the things I spend time doing.

The Life of Pi
• Colourful movie by Ang Lee, or maybe it was cos it was about India. Indian movies/books tend to be super colorful.
• About a boy in between. In between traditional and modernity, between a mom brought up in religion and a dad who believed in science. Raised in India, but named after a French swimming pool and nicknamed after a mathematical Greek?Roman? Symbol Pi. In between Hindu, Muslim and Catholicism. In between practicality (he saw how the tiger ate a goat) and idealism (right till the end he still fantasized he had a relationship, he sees the soul in his eyes, with the tiger)
• Lovely images of the animals, the sea, the island with the meerkat
• Incredible story about his survival with a large carnivorous and hungry animal
• Wildly fascinating but I'm not sure about the meaning. Is it about the presence of God?

Thankful back to work

Not that Im thankful to be back at work but Im thankful I got to leave work at 6ish!!! Got a seat this morning!!!! Had a bubble tea - green tea macchiato is yummy and fruity. And thankful that there was dinner at home although I forgot to text earlier! Thankful that theres healthy chrysanthemum to drink.

Lifes pretty good.

Regulations


There are generally three forms of regulations to correct market failure:

  1. Economic regulation: To check exclusionary and exploitative conduct of players with Significant Market Power. This is exercised through price regulation, competition law, and other ex ante requirements including unbundling or requirements to provide access to essential facilities
  2. Public interest/ consumer protection: To correct negative externalities, ensure distributional justice and protect the consumer (e.g. through minimum quality of service, to ensure safety and security, correct information asymmetries, etc). This could take the form of universal service obligations, quality of service requirements, security screening/vetting, and consumer protection frameworks such as requiring key service terms to be clearly stated upfront and providing dispute resolution options.
  3. Technical regulation: To standardise, coordinate and ensure inter-operability. This is exercised through standards setting, registration and testing of the product/resource. 

There should also be attention paid to challenges of enforcing the regulations.

Tips for Giving and Receiving Feedback

How to Give Feedback
  • Lead with intent. “The reason I am telling you this is …. I am hoping the result of this conversation will be ….”
  • Have a conversation. View the conversation as a two-way exchange, not a one-way dump.
  • Understand the goal. The purpose of constructive feedback is to encourage the other to move into a problem-solving conversation with you, not to “change” for you. The purpose of complimentary feedback is to help the other more fully own and leverage their strengths.
  • Focus on the behavior. Discuss its impact on you and/or your organization.
  • Language matters. Avoid attributions or labels such as “you are insensitive.” Do not make up stories about why they act in a certain way, such as “you don’t care.” Use “I” language instead of “You” language, but remember that saying “I feel that you are insensitive” and “I feel that you don’t care” is cheating.
  • Use inquiry. Ask what the other person hears you saying. Ask what is important to them. Ask what they need in return from you.
  • Reframe. Maintain the mental model that feedback is a gift — it is data. And more data is always better because it provides us with choices we wouldn’t otherwise have.
How to Be a Good Receiver of Feedback
  • Tamp down your defensiveness. Avoid justifying, explaining, or making the other person wrong. Remember that feedback is data and having data is better than not having it because it expands our choices and results in healthier relationships.
  • Become curious. Tell yourself: “This person is upset with something I do. If I can figure out what that is, I can move toward solving the problem.”
  • Repeat. Ask questions. “So, I hear that you are really annoyed and think I am not committed. Yes? It would be helpful to me if I understood what it is that I do that results in you feeling that way.”
  • Signal that you understand. “I hear that the fact that sometimes I don’t respond to your texts for several days is what leaves you feeling that I am not committed.” This is better than getting into an argument about whether or not you are committed.
  • Thank the giver. At some level they care enough to say something.
  • Know when to stop. It is OK, and even preferable, to say when you need to take a break and negotiate a time to return to the conversation. The giver may have waited until he or she was really upset before saying anything, and therefore it is often easier to take the issues a bit at a time.

Entered the university by chance really. came across the students having their graduation ceremony and thinking of mine. congregating at mcewan hall. itwas Breezy but sunny. everyone looking smart in their graduation gown, me in my freshly cut bob. sitting in that dark,dark hall. waiting for your turn to be tapped on the head by someone's trousers. gathering with laura, rahima, hannah and some at balmoral hotel, sipping tea with their parents, feeling posh, feeling like i'm part of the system. just as these Newcastle students sit at quillan bros tea house sipping tea. looks like a lovely place to have tea. but it's not for me, at least not today. i shall continue my journey.

London Reflections 2015

London Reflections #1
Coming back to explore  previously unexplored territory. Thinking of the UK as a second home though I've never actually lived in London. But while the people and roads are unfamiliar. The systems, the signs, the accents, the vegetation, the air are all familiar, familiar enough not to give me a jarring sensation, the sensation that tells you're abroad in  brand, new exciting destination. Not to say I wasn't thrilled to be seeing a part of London I haven't seen before, not to say I don't enjoy, but it lacks the thrill and fear of a totally unknown destination. I guess I know what to expect and it is very comforting.

a moment of silence for the 7/7 victims. a complete silence as all stopped in their steps and lowered their heads. no clattering of utensils or shuffling of feet. till the intercom sparkled to life, bringing an end to the moment.

An oak tree. Completely bizarre. An actor who doesnt know the script. A hypnotist who lost his skill. A father who lost his daughter. An audience is in the clouds as the two men switched between scripts. A free conversation.. that is totally scripted. The loss of girl who is not dead. The concept, the idea of a person. The concept, the idea of  play. An accident, the actor takes on the attributes of the playwright.

would love to spend more time figuring the play really.
but moving on for now..

Balancing Local Sentiments and Economic Benefits

Read this article this morning, and felt that it really reinforced this belief I have, that sometimes governments need to be firm on their long-term goals because the people tend to be blinded by short-term effects without realising the long-term benefits. This came also in the wake of the various critical articles about LKY after his passing away earlier...

Hong Kong is now suffering a decline in tourism numbers of 34% y-o-y, influenced by the various anti-Chinese campaigns over the past year or so. The most recent public holiday in China, which usually brings an influx of visitors to Hong Kong, did little to alleviate the decline.

The anti-Chinese sentiments began with the influx of 'businessmen' bringing counterfeit goods to and fro Shenzhen and Hong Kong. These businessmen are seen to bring down the quality of life in Hong Kong as they are usually from the lower classes of society. A series of anti-Chinese incidents began as the Hong Kong residents began to see all Chinese visitors as threat to their society and way of living.

The incidents brought the effect that the residents hoped for, a decline in Chinese visitorship. However, the counterfeit goods smugglers, according to the article, not fazed by the bad attitude of the Hong Kong residents towards them given the potential profit to be earned, continue to come in large numbers. Instead, the higher quality Chinese high-spenders are deterred, opting for other (more luxurious/ better service most likely) destinations, affecting the service industry which had depended to a large extent on them.

Should the government have taken a harder stance on protesters, or should the protesters have been given their freedom of expression? It's hard to say really, but I'm imploring those who unconditionally advocate freedom of expression to think deeper about what this freedom really entails.

Politics

Politics make me ugly.
They bring out a me that I hate and despise and want to laugh at. A me so full of angst at the world, at the inability of people to understand these bubbling problems, at the way I know so little, and at the frustration of never knowing enough. A me that rants about the problems, hurtfully, sharply, critically, rudely, that will never be resolved. A me that feels so weak and small and pathetic in this monstrous world out there.

But, I can't help commenting on things that I see.

The onslaught of posts about LKY led me to this ironic statement - who IS this Liu Shengjun -:

The other side of things. Or the passing.

The death of Lee Kuan Yew had affected many, hit the headlines all over the world, and once again put our little island on the global map.

It touched me though I've never interacted with the man, except two brief encounters at F1 one year when I was attending to the Singapore Suite, and again from a far distance during NDP. I've always appreciated what Singapore has to offer, and the legacy he left behind, believing that we needed a leader like him to bring us here, and an equally revolutionary leader to bring us further from here on. Living overseas, be it in a developed country like the UK or in a less applauded country like China, made me count my blessings that a country like mine with no natural resources but its people (who were mostly immigrants) can do so well.

But saw this article on how he had become the excuse of many autocrats in other parts of the world to rule their countries with an iron hand at the expense of their citizens. It doesn't feel right to blame LKY for this, but I can understand how they have twisted his methods to suit their needs. Haven't formed a coherent thought on this article but thought it was interesting and wanted to capture it before I lose this thought...

Those random moments

Was walking to office across Xintiandi after lunch.

A girl stops me, says "Excuse me?"
I turn around, thinking it was a lost tourist, asking for directions (we see many of those in these areas, some of whom will ask where Xintiandi is).
She says "Can we take a picture for you as a street shot for their magazine?"

I was stunned to say the least.
And, as usual, rejected - (on hindsight, I should have just said yes. This could be my only ever chance).

Was it possible Thomas was a psychopath (I need to read more to ascertain)? His disdain of other people; his clever manipulation of the people around him who financed his life; his careless irresponsibility and lack of concern for consequences. I do think he ticks many boxes on Hare's checklist. Worth a look into for curiousity's sake.. someday.

SMEs always fascinated me. I think it's because you seldom hear about them and yet they form the majority in terms of number of companies (revenue? employees? I have no idea) in the business landscape.

The title of the article naturally caught my attention but really the conclusion that SMEs survive better if they ally with diverse partners is not very instructive or illuminating. SMEs, given their size, tend to focus on a specific area of expertise, which makes it very natural for them to need partners to cover the whole value chain if they wish to succeed? Am I missing something here...? I think what would be interesting would be a deeper analysis of the types of alliances and business models that have flourished. It would also be interesting to compare the difference between countries. Do different operating environments/ business culture affect the way SMEs partner other companies, and how?

Sustainable Growth

President Xi Jinping has taken some actions to slow China's economy in a bid to produce more sustainable growth:
(1) visa restrictions, (2) the anti-corruption campaign, and (3) UnionPay monitoring.

This has hit the gambling industry worldwide badly. With the implementation of the anti-corruption measures, the casinos had already felt the initial impact of the policies. But Xi is not going to stop there. A more targeted move against gambling shows Xi's resolve in this matter. Through limiting visas, monitoring frequent gamblers' spend, banning advertisements and such measures, the casinos are in for a bad year.

While this may not bode well for us, I think it's time someone took action on this issue.
It's not just about China and their need for sustainable growth.
It's about how the whole world is spurring economic growth today.

The whole world investing all their efforts and resources in this one country desperately needs to rethink their strategy. The mad investment (see all the reports on Chinese spending consumption behaviours, the crazy advertisements, the proliferation of Chinese-speaking sales staff all over the world) in this market is creating a bubble that would not last. When the spending began to slow a few years back, reports started coming up about targeting the wiser Chinese spenders who spend with greater discretion, every country fighting to win one another for a slice of the Chinese pie put in a disporportionate amount of effort to rework marketing messages to unearth the reasons for Chinese to spend, developing products that provides greater incentives for spending.

Now, with the impending slowdown, what would happen to all these efforts? Have we overestimated the potential of this market in a bid to outdo each other?

2015 feels like a scary year.

Reviewing my time in Shanghai.

Well, not so much an intellectual review but just feeling nostalgic looking through some of my old photos and decided maybe I should start documenting these before I forget - though I've probably already forgotten the feeling. I've looked through some of my older posts, and I can't help thinking that it's not me writing these posts? I can vaguely recall the emotions, mindset of that person writing but it's definitely not me anymore. The way I write, the way I view things, the way I conduct myself are irreversibly changed. And the thing about change is, it's not like how people see it, a two- way thing, you can either go left or right, better or worse - just one or the other.. but really it's multi-directional. Don't think of change as a point on a straight line, it's a point that veers in all direction erratically, drastically in a mad chase of randomness. So don't ask me if I've changed for the better or worse. I don't know what to say.

Anyway, its so slow and laggy I've decided to.. give up.
LOL.

Will relook this.. some other time. HAHA.

Zhang JunAlthough China’s economy has expanded at a staggering pace over the last three decades, its growth model is now widely agreed to be exhausted. Even China’s top leadership acknowledges the need for change – a belief that culminated in the far-reaching reform agenda presented two months ago at the Third Plenum of the Chinese Communist Party’s 18th Central Committee.
While not everyone agrees on exactly what the new growth model should look like, proposals do not differ drastically, given the prevailing consensus that the current model rests on an unsustainable foundation. On the demand side, many economists endorse a shift from investment-led to consumption-driven growth. Even more popular is the supply-side recommendation of a shift from extensive to intensive growth – that is, from a model based on capital accumulation to one propelled by gains in efficiency, measured by total factor productivity (TFP).
These recommendations are presumably influenced by Paul Krugman’s criticism in 1994 of Soviet-style extensive growth in East Asian economies (especially Singapore). At the time, Jeffery Sachs disagreed, asserting that the East Asian model included far more efficient market-based investment allocation than the Soviet model did, and thus was unique; nonetheless, the criticism stuck.
It was not long before some Chinese economists began to categorize the growth pattern brought about three decades ago by Deng Xiaoping’s reforms as “extensive” – and thus problematic. A consensus has gradually emerged around this idea, with calls for a shift toward intensive, efficiency-driven growth intensifying since China’s GDP growth began to slow in 2011.
But empirical research reveals a fundamental problem with this argument: China’s TFP has grown at an average annual rate of nearly 4% since Deng’s reforms began. If the United States’ economy, with a TFP growth rate of only 1-2% annually, is considered efficiency-driven, why is China’s not? More important, if China’s TFP growth is expected to slow, as major drivers like the convergence effect wane, what does it mean to say that efficiency gains should propel China’s future growth?
Consider the facts. A conservative assessment by Louis Kuijs, working with the World Bank, shows that, from 1978 to 1994, China’s GDP grew by an average of 9.9% annually, labor productivity increased by 6.4%, TFP rose by 3%, and the capital-labor ratio increased by 2.9%. In the period from 1994 to 2009, annual GDP growth averaged 9.6%, labor productivity increased by 8.6%, TFP increased by 2.7%, and the capital-labor ratio rose by 5.5%.
Similarly, Dwight Perkins and Tom Rawski found that from 1978 to 2005, China’s GDP grew by 9.5%, while capital investment grew by 9.6%, contributing 44.7% to GDP. The share of tertiary graduates in the labor force rose to 2.7% by 2005, accounting for 16.2% of GDP growth. And TFP grew by 3.8%, adding 40.1% to GDP growth.
While capital has been the largest contributor to China’s GDP, the economy’s TFP performance has been impressive – something that cannot be explained by an extensive growth pattern. Indeed, Japan’s rate of TFP growth never reached such high levels, even at the country’s economic peak. Even Hong Kong – the East Asian economy with the best TFP performance – registered only 2.4% average annual TFP growth from 1960 to 1990.
But annual TFP growth is not the only relevant figure. China’s TFP has contributed 35-40% to GDP growth, compared to an estimated 20-30% in East Asia’s “four tigers” (Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan). As for the Soviet Union, even in its best years, TFP accounted for only about 10% of GDP growth.
Though China’s TFP contribution to GDP growth is much greater than in the other so-called “extensive” economies, it remains well below levels in the intensive US economy, where the figure exceeds 80% – a divergence that some might use to justify their refusal to define China’s economy as “efficiency-driven.” But this argument ignores the fact that China has been experiencing double-digit annual GDP growth, owing largely to capital expansion, while America’s annual GDP growth has averaged only 2-3%.
If transforming China’s growth pattern were simply a matter of increasing TFP’s contribution to GDP to US levels, China’s annual GDP growth would have to drop to below 5% – three percentage points lower than its potential growth rate. Given 8% GDP growth, TFP would have to grow 6.4% annually. This is almost certainly impossible, owing to the gradual diminution of the major drivers – including market-oriented economic reforms, the convergence effect on per capita income, and the adoption of foreign technologies – of China’s extraordinary TFP growth over the last 30 years.
All of this raises a simple question: Do extensive- or intensive-growth models really exist? Perhaps there is only fast versus slow, or extraordinary versus ordinary.
According to this view, if a developing economy can realize extraordinary growth, it must be because it offers greater opportunities for capital expansion than a developed economy. After all, investment opportunity is inversely proportional to per capita capital stock. On this point, Krugman is right: such investment-fueled growth is achieved largely through perspiration, rather than inspiration. But so what?
The fact that some of Asia’s most dynamic economies – including China, Japan, and the four tigers (Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan) – have experienced investment-propelled growth and improvements in TFP simultaneously can be explained by the fact that TFP gains increase investment returns, accelerating capital expansion further. Though further analysis is needed to elucidate the long-term relationship between capital expansion and TFP, it is clear that the long-accepted theory that they cannot co-exist is seriously flawed.
In short, when it comes to Asian economies, the dichotomy of extensive and intensive growth is a red herring. A far more meaningful consideration is what drove these TFP gains; understanding that would enable China’s leaders to design a more effective plan for strengthening the economy’s long-term growth prospects.

Getting Old

In Shanghai, people come and go.
It's been some time since the old gang (Heather, Yunhua, Willie, Liwei) left and I guess a new gang is forming.

Was having coffee with the boys in the new gang last weekend and somehow ended up talking about getting old, about the fear girls have of getting old and remaining single and unmarried (which seems very likely for me right now zzz). Especially since I was watching that Taiwanese drama which had all these 初老症状.

It's time to do a stock take:

Fallacy

These days you see too many articles and stories about school drop-outs who make it big.
I don't disagree, but I do want to say that while many(?) world-changing people out there are school drop-outs, many school drop-outs don't make it big.

I doubt the relationship between school drop-out and world-changer is a causal one, however far removed.

There's a name for this kind of fallacy that I learnt in university but I don't remember.
And somehow this reminds me of David Hume.
And also that story about the balloon and the car.
And that story about how people who don't eat seafood are more likely to be murderers.
And of course, the democratic peace theory.

PS Fallacy is called cum hoc ergo propter hoc for whoever cares.
Doesn't sound familiar at all though...

You may gamble away your money, but you should never gamble your friendship.

mmd,老子喝了点酒留了点鼻涕,发张照片发微薄居然有人说恶心,行,老子喝了点,但没喝多,说点赌博的事,看恶不恶心,反正高考作文我满分,喝多了也不至于有逻辑问题。
  今年凯雷给我们投了一笔钱,向大家想象的一样,这里面肯定有对赌条款,但是唯一不一样的是,最大的赌家是我,单从这次赌局规则来说,这是一个只有我输或者平的赌法。但是,这是我制定的赌局,为了做一件我认为对的事情而设的赌局,我一辈子只想做对的事情,虽然总是错。
  今年年初和凯雷谈融资的时候,双方根据中国几家在美国上市的酒店公司估值以及企业的成长预期做出了一个估值,到接近年中的时候双方进入合同最后阶段,这个时候几家在美国上市的公司估值半年下降了30%左右,估值成了双方最大的问题。
  做为全球最大的私募基金之一,凯雷公司自然有非常严谨的估值体系(别告诉我你不知道凯雷有多大,总之凯雷几乎是你知道的投资公司里最大的),虽然他们非常理解这是资本市场的原因造成的在美国上市的中国股的大跌,虽然他们知道我们做的精品酒店与经济型酒店差别很大,但是他们老大不知道中国情况,所以客观上会造成我们的估值显得比较高,所以双方再估值的问题上碰到了比较大的障碍。
  我实在不愿意看到降低企业的估值的结果,因为企业估值一旦降低,老的投资人所占比例就会降低,而跟我多年打拼的兄弟们以及主要的骨干,他们的期权所占公司股份同样会下降,换句话说,信任我的投资人还有跟着我的兄弟们要吃亏。
  于是,我做了一个决定,我拿出自己全部的期权交给凯雷抵押,如果企业做得不好,我的期权将全部转给凯雷,而如果企业做得好,我则拿回我的期权。凯雷公司最终接受了我的条件。
  我是公司的创始人,也是公司的股东。酒店是一个资本密集型的行业,我个人投的那点钱在公司里根本算不了什么,所以,几轮投资之后我自己在公司所占的股份几乎说是微不足道。做为创始人和企业的主要管理人员,企业给了我一些期权,所以期权如果能行权将使得我在公司里的股份得以上升。换句话说,如果公司能够成功,期权是我获得收益的最主要来源。
  我这一辈子做企业从来没有开口要过什么,记得携程季琦蒙我去的时候问我要多少钱,我说副总拿多少我就拿多少,最后老子做了资深副总的时候发现自己的工资比手底下的总监还低,总之,我比较二逼。几次做企业不算太好也不算太坏,公司卖出时投资者都获得了较高的回报,无论我是大股东还是小股东,每次企业卖出我都以牺牲我个人利益来换取朋友之间的友谊,换句话说,每次我都是选择不伤朋友而不是选择钱。
  这次做桔子水晶酒店也一样,我从开始就没有为自己要什么。刚开始和投资人一起要做的时候我投的钱跟大家都是一样的估值比例,我没有一点干股。前期给整个公司发过两次期权都很少,所以第二次期权我一点都没拿,全部给员工分了。直到上一轮投资进来的时候,新投资人认为我的股份太少,没有人敢投这样的企业,所以公司追加了些期权。
  这次我敢赌的原因其实很简单:
  1) 我觉得企业要是真的没做好,我不配拿钱;当然,我要让事实证明我是不是那么的无能;
  2) 在08年金融危机的时候,企业那么难,我的投资人那么信任我,所以我有100个道理要回报他们的信任,哪怕老子颗粒无收;
  3) 公司里的兄弟们不容易,如果企业万一没做好,我能以我的牺牲换来大家的小康生活,值了。就算我到时候没有饭吃,他们也不会让我饿死;
  4) 凯雷的老张人也不错,他也不会太为难我,只要说得过去,他不会让我光屁股;
  5) 我没本事,但是围住了一帮兄弟,虽然大多没加过面,每次都住我的酒店照顾我的生意,所以我不会做得太差。
  人活一辈子怎么都是过,但是,我总觉得人要做一些对的事情,前几次公司退出都没有让我的兄弟们走上小康生活,我一直觉得心里难受。这一次可能是我一辈子最后的机会,一个能够让跟着我多年的兄弟以及认真在公司工作的每一个同事得到回报的机会。就算我自己无能,最惨的结果也坏不到哪里去,因为至少是当我没饭吃的时候我有一帮我开口就能给我饭吃的兄弟!
  这就是我的赌博,我相信我的兄弟们一起努力一定不会让我输的赌博。

I must say I've left the Social Media field for a while now.
But I do remember little bits about how people can try to improve their blog ratings or things like that..

Well.. I just found it rather unusual when there were like 9 comments on this practically defunct blog. I mean.. I post like on an average of once a month with long periods of inactivity. I don't proclaim to be an interesting writer so it is kind of odd. Not to mention, some of the comments on how it's insightful, or it's a great tip or blah.. when all I did was to post someone else's song. Lovely song no doubt. Not particularly insightful on my part I must say though.

Passion Run.

Off I go running early in the morning.

Signed up for a 4km run (I know it's nothing much) but I began regretting it the moment my alarm clock rang at 6am in the morning. Who wakes up at 6am in the morning anyway... Thoughts crossed my mind: maybe if I pretended to oversleep, or maybe if it pours, maybe I can just go back to sleep...

Didn't work, so ended up waiting in line patiently with the hundreds of wannabe runners about a few hundred metres away from the starting line (cos the queue was that long), and went off.. to a staggering start as we tried to manoeuvre (I still can't spell this odd word) around mothers pushing prams, old couples taking a hike, some sightseeing ladies and some angsty youths.

Not a long run, but I started to feel the stress on my underworked heart and lungs and legs and then you begin to hear the yells. The very enthusiastic volunteers along the road yelling at the runners to go on, it's just 1km left, there's free yoghurt at the end of it all, come on, you can do it. The energy's infectious and the runners pick up their speed (or it could be the free yoghurt after all).

And... it's over.

Bikini Workout Part 2

Part 2 makes it sound like I'm actually working out.

But the actual sad news is that I don't have a resistance band so I guess I'm giving up. I've tried one of the exercise. But surely it wouldn't do if I only train one part of my body. I might actually end up looking pretty weird right.. So.. there goes :D

Blog Writing Mood

Yeah. I'm in a blog-writing mood.

I'm not sure why.
It's not to clock up the posts. I've only made 4 sad posts these years. My worst year thus far has been 2008 where I made only 13 posts. They are however really exciting posts. Because they have PICTURES. And they're beautiful. And they're happy. They make me smile.

That's what blogs are for right? To keep the happy moments?

Man.. I need to try harder.

Bikini-Ready Body

Somehow blogging stopped becoming a habit once I lost my own place.
I need a room of my own.

Well.. and obviously I'm thinking of Virginia Woolf.

Anyway, this is about my resolution (kind of like a this-month's resolution) - and a very prosaic and non-intellectual, possibly even anti-intellectual, type of resolution - and yes you are right, it is:-

TO have a bikini-ready body.

Inspired, well, not quite inspired, but just perhaps reminded of it by the SHAPE September Issue - how I received that magazine is yet another story. [Stop rambling!] It has a lovely 2-page sprawl of exercises I could do twice a week for two weeks and I'll have that amazing Bikini-Ready Body it flaunts on its cover page. 

I am going to start this coming week. 
And hopefully two weeks later, I'll remember to blog.
And hopefully, I would have good news.

It doesn't feel like Singapore today.

Just left the Chinese Gardens. Peaceful, serene, green, conservation. Then the weather, cool, sun, breeze, clear blue sky, azure blue. Unfamiliar buildings. Lush greenery. It's like I came to a foreign place that is strangely familiar.

Today, I feel that Singapore is beautiful.
I can almost leave behind the traffic jams, the frustrations and the congestion. Just me and my home country.

And just ate my cup noodle so my luggage has more space. Despite the fact that I finished that horrible tandoori chicken wrap at like 7pm Saudi time. It's like 11pm Saudi time now. I'm gonna grow fat.

A little worried about the meetings tomorrow. I hope I know enough...

One Day.
Just watched 'One Day'.. and I feel so sad.
I don't think it was the love story behind it.. but every scene of Edinburgh, the university, Arthur's Seat and the view from up there, Princes Street made me remember how beautiful Edinburgh is and made me realize how much I've fallen in love with the city.
I don't know what it is about the city I love. I mean.. I hate the weather. And I was glad to come back because I missed everyone so much. But I just love it. Crossing South Bridge and peering over at Cowgate and wondering about how this multi-tiered city works. Sipping that rich hot chocolate at Chocolate Soup on wintry days, wintry nights.. Those cobbled pavements. Those buildings darkened with soot from the industrial age. The gloomy sky. Jogging around Arthur's seat. The beautiful swan lake. The gorgeous view from Calton's Hill. The windy secret paths that you somehow chance upon and never find again.
I thought 4 years in one city.. and I'll have had enough of it. But.. it's only been slightly more than a year and I keep thinking about it. I think.. Edinburgh will always have a special place in my heart.

Just finished up some work and feeling kinda lazy to sleep...

What's on my mind now?
1. It's nice to be up alone on a rainy night. I never get this kind of peaceful times anymore. Not since a long time ago in Edinburgh with my Sushi takeaway in my cold cold room. Just me and my duvet.

2. I want to do something. It could be an exercise thing - going for yoga classes or dance classes (I think I'd like the idea of a dance class though I can't really dance) or kickboxing or whatever. But I don't think I'll be very motivated. Or it could be a learning thing - like learning Bahasa or Italian. If it's useful enough, I might push myself to do it. Or it could be a happy music thing - I want to go get me some scores and start building my dreams of being a freelance pianist. I'm not a great pianist but maybe if I master enough cheesy music, people might pay me a little to play that odd piece. What a wonderful thing it would be. Maybe it's not the cash that entices me. Maybe it's the feeling of being able to perform again. I'm not sure. It would be lovely if I could retire and live on playing the piano. I wouldn't mind playing the same pieces over and over again. Because I know for me, everytime I play... it's a different piece. Maybe I should get a new piano...

3. Old and boring. You leave the fun school no-responsibility life. And things happen throughout your life, the experiences add up, they scare you, they make you wary, and you become a cautious boring person, so afraid of doing things wrong you don't do anything at all. I feel that I'm becoming a boring person. Feel like you're not at liberty to do embarrassing things anymore. Feel like 'youth' is no longer an excuse for doing stupid things. Feel like the whole world is judging... because you're a responsible working adult now.

Wow. So much on my mind. No wonder I'm still awake.

I've always been fascinated by India and China ever since a lecture I've had in Edinburgh.Can't remember who it was, or which module it was for. But it was an interesting paper.

Two emerging countries, huge in land mass and population. Usually conflated in discussions. Usually known for its low labour costs, and its burgeoning potential. But so different. In terms of development, of strengths. The question that the lecture inspired in me was: Why is India not as prominent in the global scene as China?

People talk of China as the next rising superpower, of its competition to US. But not India.
India has its strengths. Its people. Its English proficiency. Its amazing IT sector. Its British colonial legacy making it less hard (arguably, compared to China) to work with the West. But.. no, it's China people talk about. Why?

Saw this article on the Economist: Chasing the Dragon, which reinforced this thought. That China is advancing much more rapidly. Is it because China had a headstart? But isn't it begging the question? Why did China have a headstart? Is it the workings of one man (Deng Xiao Ping?)? Will India ever catch up?

This figure shows how far behind India is based on some criteria of development.

PS Just wondering if the title 'Chasing the Dragon' is coincidental, or if it has an intentional allusion to the practice of inhaling opium (very Chinese!). Hm.

Mm.. I should not try to have unhappy posts.
Think about it this way...

By turning to this blog only as a way of venting my frustrations, I will end up documenting all my sad or angry moments, while the happy moments turn to dust.
I don't want to look back and see a backlog of sad posts.

Perhaps I could write down my frustrations in temporary documents, and jot down my happy moments on a more permanent platform. Then one day... when I'm old, I can read my memories.. with the sad ones faded to an illegible blur and the happy ones etched forever :)

There was a period when I was obsessed with taking photos.
I wanted to capture everything in my life,  because I had a poor memory, and because there were so many beautiful memories I wanted to capture before they fade away.

And then... I'm not sure when... I stopped.
It might be when professional photography became the norm. And my silly photos - blurry, low resolution, with a hand cut off and a leg missing, with no concept of composition or colour or lighting, just a simple photo to trigger my memory - my silly photos just became quite inadequate.
It might be when things got a lot tougher... when there weren't quite so many beautiful memories I needed to capture... when in fact there are so many memories I wish I could delete.

It feels kinda sad. But I don't know why. It's just... not the same anymore.

She told me about how she was going to do a picture a day.. to mark her year. And I wanted to do it too. Sort of a visual memory to my year. Because time flies. And memories fade. But somehow I didn't get into the habit and I haven't had a single picture yet. Maybe I'm a procrastinator :) Maybe I should just collect a picture a week of something that has inspired me that week. And by the end of a year, I'll have 52 pictures of inspiring moments... Hmm... I really want something to keep track of the time.. Wouldn't want to realise 5 years down the road that I have no clue what I did in the past 5 years... That will be one scary moment o.0

I really like reading abt the latest studies...

Reading abt how since bored drivers are 1.5 times as likely to get into an accident as engaged drivers, researchers suggest making roads more challenging to 'increase driver's focus'
Reading abt how those who walk faster were 90% more likely to live at least 10 years more.

Aren't research findings pretty incredible sometimes?
89.7% of peoPle in the US describe their diet as healthy. Close to two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese.

To quote Richard Stengal in the 24th Jan issue of Newsweek,
"Mere advocacy" of any doctrine, however violent, does not violate the First Amendment. And that makes sense. Words don't kill people; guns do. In an open and free society, we don't police speech, but we do police those who violate the law by committing violent acts.

Hm seems to make sense, but doesn't seem to be an accurate portrayal of the US.
